Brands with 5+ source types get 78% AI coverage. With 1 source type, 18%. The audit is necessary but not sufficient
Erlin tracked 500+ brands across ChatGPT, Perplexity, Gemini, and Claude throughout 2026. The finding that changes how you think about AI visibility is not about content structure or schema markup. It is about how many different types of sources mention you. Brands with only one source type (their own website) achieve 18% average AI coverage. Brands with five or more source types achieve 78%. That is a 4.3x difference, and it has nothing to do with the quality of their on-page content. The data Erlin's State of AI Search 2026 tracked 500+ brands and measured how often each one appeared in AI-generated answers across four engines. They categorized the sources driving visibility: Source types Average AI coverage 1 source type 18% 2 source types 35% 3 source types 58% 5+ source types 78% The relationship is nearly linear. Each additional source type adds roughly 15-20 percentage points of coverage. Distributing content to a wide range of publications can increase AI citations by up to 325% compared to publishing only on your own site. What "source types" means Erlin classified sources into types: brand-owned websites, third-party publications, Reddit and forums, review platforms (G2, Capterra), Wikipedia, social platforms, video platforms, and industry reports. A brand with "1 source type" appears in AI answers only through its own website. A brand with "5+ source types" appears through its website, plus Reddit threads, plus review sites, plus third-party articles, plus Wikipedia or social mentions. The mechanism is consensus. LLMs are designed to minimize hallucination by checking for agreement across multiple sources. If a brand is mentioned only on its own website, the model has one source. If it is mentioned on its website, on Reddit, on G2, and in two industry publications, the model has five sources that agree. The brand becomes a high-confidence answer. This is why third-party presence matters more than on-page optimization for AI visibility. You can have a perfect GEO score (90/100) and still be invisible if no one else talks about you. You can have a mediocre site and still appear in AI answers if five independent sources mention your brand. How this connects to the calibration study The calibration study I published last week found that the GEO score does not predict whether Perplexity cites a page (odds ratio 0.9625, p = 0.7172). The Erlin data explains why. The GEO score measures on-page citability. Erlin's data shows that AI coverage scales with off-page source diversity. These are different dimensions. The audit checks whether your page is reachable and parseable. It does not check whether anyone else mentions you. The 18% vs 78% gap is not about your page. It is about your presence across the web. What this means for your strategy 1. The audit is necessary but not sufficient. If your site is blocked, JS-only, or missing basic signals, no amount of third-party presence will help. The crawler needs to read your page. Fix the foundation first. But do not stop there. 2. Source diversity is the lever the audit cannot pull. Getting mentioned on Reddit, G2, industry publications, and Wikipedia is not something a site audit tool can do for you. It is PR, community participation, and content distribution. The audit tells you if your door is open. Source diversity determines if anyone walks through it. 3. One source type is a trap. Brands that only publish on their own website and wait for AI engines to discover them are at 18% coverage. That is barely better than random. The gap between 18% and 78% is not about better content on your site. It is about the same content appearing in different contexts across different platforms. 4. Reddit is still relevant for Perplexity. ChatGPT's Reddit citations dropped 88% (per Ahrefs), but Perplexity still cites Reddit in 20% of answers (per Evertune). Q&A threads account for over 50% of AI citations from Reddit. Participation in category conversations, not just broadcasting, is what builds Reddit-sourced citation authority. The SaaS gap This is where the gap between the free audit and the monitoring platform becomes clear. The audit tells you if your page is readable. The monitoring platform tells you if your score changed. Neither tells you if your source diversity increased. That is the next layer. Citation tracking across engines, source-type classification, and coverage scoring over time. The paid tools (Otterly, Peec AI, Scrunch, Profound) do some of this. The open-source tool does not. The GeoReady platform is building toward it. If you want to start with the foundation, run a free audit on geoready.dev. It tells you if AI crawlers can read your page. If your score is low, fix that first. If your score is high and you are still invisible in AI answers, your gap is source diversity, and no audit tool can fix that for you.
